British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
