Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
