The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
