Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
